DC Area Forecast: Storms Threaten Later in the Day, Great Weather Follows

A somewhat subjective rating of today’s weather, on a scale of 0 to 10.

3/10: High 80s for the highs aren’t bad, but the humidity is gross and some late day storms might pack a punch.

  • Today: Early fog, some sun. Risk of storm late. Tops: 80 to 85.
  • This evening: Scattered showers and thunderstorms, some violent. Low: Close to 65.
  • Tomorrow: Decrease in clouds and humidity. Highs: Close to 80.

Once we get through today – which is soupy, scorching and potentially stormy – the weather for this week is pretty darn nice. Most days offer abundant sunshine, comfortably warm afternoons and pleasant evenings. Mid-September is historically the start of one of the most beautiful times of the year, and this year seems to be playing the part.

Today (Monday): Patches of fog are a good early bet before the skies slowly clear up through the morning. Skies should be partly sunny in the afternoon, helping us warm up to around 80-85 degrees amid light southerly winds (5-10 mph). It’s awfully muggy, with dew points in the 70s, and that humidity could help fuel late afternoon showers and storms, especially in our western regions. A few storms could be severe with damaging winds and very heavy rain. There is also the outside chance of a brief tornado. Confidence: medium

This evening: Showers and storms become more likely across the region during the evening and some could be intense producing a few pockets of flooding. Although the rain cover will diminish overnight, a few widely scattered showers will still be possible with lows near 65. Light southerly winds shift to the northwest. Confidence: medium-high

Tomorrow (Tuesday): The day can start cloudy and we cannot rule out a persistent downpour. But the clouds lessen and the sunshine increases as the day progresses, while the humidity decreases (dew points drop from the 60s to the 50s). Highs are near 80 with light westerly winds (about 5-10 mph). Confidence: medium-high

Tomorrow evening: We will have clear skies, and it will be delightful as the refreshing air continues to spread across the region. Lows range from the mid to upper 50s in our cooler areas to the low 60s downtown. Confidence: medium-high

The prospects of Wednesday to Friday looks gorgeous. Partially to mostly sunny skies dominate throughout, and daily highs are mostly in the 80s, while humidity remains under control (dew points in the 50s to near 60s). Nights are mostly clear and comfortable with lows ranging from mid 50s to low 60s. Confidence: Medium-High

The weekend could go well too, but there are a few wrinkles. First, a low pressure area developing off the southeast coast is likely to remain far enough east to not be a problem, but will need to be watched, especially on Saturday. Second, an area of high pressure off the northeast coast could send moisture and maybe a few low clouds our way, especially by Sunday. For now, I’ll call partly sunny skies and highs in the 80s both days, but the forecast could change. Confidence: medium
