BHUBANESWAR: Behind OdishaThe rise of “top performers” in the latest ranking of states on the support of startup ecosystems in the “leaders” category in 2019 is based on a strong focus on women entrepreneurs, continuous support and monitoring by 15 institutions nodes and an extensive network of incubators respond to grassroots innovations.
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik’s office said Odisha’s recognition as a top performer was possible thanks to a conducive ecosystem.
“#Odisha has been recognized as the top performer in the State/UT Startup Rankings 2021 for developing a strong start-up ecosystem in the state. With a conducive ecosystem, policy intervention and exemplary initiatives, the state has become a pioneer in capacity building,” the CMO tweeted.
The Department of Industry Promotion and Internal Commerce recognized the state’s efforts to institute inclusive and holistic policies and programs to develop entrepreneurs in all corners of the state.
Omkar Rai, executive chairman of Startup Odisha, the state government agency that promotes start-ups, said 40% of entrepreneurs in the state’s start-up ecosystem are women. “The inclusive approach and a world-class science ecosystem have helped us reach new heights. There is a long way to go,” Rai said.
Odisha’s 1,320 startups have generated over 10,000 jobs. A total of 23 university incubators held the startups. While 140 startups were supported by external financial funds, the startups raised Rs 370 crores and generated revenue of Rs 350 crores. More than 400 startups have already commercialized.
Rai said a culture of grassroots ideation and innovation, including in ITIs and polytechnics, has begun in the state. Young people are nurtured while startups are promoted in the hub and spoke model through Odisha startup O-Hub (opportunity hub).
Also, Odisha, Kerala, Maharashtra, and Telangana are the top performers among the states, alongside top performers from Gujarat and Karnataka.
