While most brands create a watch and then make up a story around the design, ZTAGE takes the exact opposite approach. ZTAGE embraces the stories, people and organizations that change the world, using these stories to inspire watch design. Hong Kong-based ZTAGE was so inspired by the stories of the recent nature documentary Our planet that they decided to join forces with the World Wildlife Fund to produce three models dedicated to the preservation of endangered ecosystems around the world. Each model is limited in production and pre-orders are only open from January 15 to 22, 2022.

Since 2017, ZTAGE has been driven by the yin and yang of innovation and tradition. By combining modern and innovative design with traditional Swiss craftsmanship, the brand believes it is able to produce the highest quality timepieces possible. All the design work is done in-house in Hong Kong, while everything from assembly of the movement and watch to the five-position regulation (+/- 6 sec / day) takes place in Switzerland, in the heart of traditional watchmaking. However, ZTAGE takes it a step further by returning the watches to its Hong Kong headquarters for a rigorous 240-hour inspection.

The documentary that inspired these watches, Our planet, was produced through a collaboration between Netflix, Silverback Films and WWF, and is narrated by the incomparable Sir David Attenborough. The film explores the wonders of the natural world and the urgent threats that endanger wildlife, threatening their very existence. ZTAGE heard the message loud and clear. Each new model represents unique habitats under threat: the frozen panoramas of Antarctica, the rapidly declining tropical rainforests of the Amazon and the vast grasslands of Africa, which are home to the greatest land migrations on the planet. A portion of the proceeds from each purchase will go directly to WWF-Hong Kong to help them in their efforts to protect these habitats for generations to come.

The first of the three models is the ZTAGE Hybrid Original Full Calendar – Glacier. Limited to just 200 pieces, this timepiece combines a full calendar complication (month, day, date and moon phase) in a monochrome case that reflects the desolate icy landscapes broken only by the towering spiers of the Transantarctic mountains. The Complete Calendar – Glacier is housed in ZTAGE’s custom four-sided integrated housing. Unlike any other product on the market and requiring two years of development, the case is designed using multi-layered construction which creates a sturdy and eye-catching visual effect.

As if you were looking at the world under Antarctic ice, the translucent dial reveals the Swiss-made ETA 2892-A2 automatic movement and the Dubois-Depraz DD90000 module powering the watch. Just as the monochrome Antarctic landscape can transform into a multi-colored spectacle under the glow of the Southern Lights, the Complete Calendar – Glacier appears at night with a green-hued moon phase with a starry sky, contrasted by pale blue needles. and markers and finished with ZTAGE’s signature pip lume on the crown.

Fleeing the frozen expanse of Antarctica, we travel alongside the suffocating amalgam of life that is the Amazon. Covering more than 7,000,000 km2 South America, the Amazon is home to the greatest biodiversity on earth – from birds and beetles to trees, the Amazon is teeming with species found nowhere else on the planet. Unfortunately, deforestation is rampant; over 17% of the Amazon rainforest has already been lost, resulting in the loss of both biodiversity and habitats that support the many indigenous communities that have depended on the ecosystem for millennia.

The deep greens of the ZTAGE Off Ground GMT – Amazonia evoke the lush, verdant hues of the landscape. Limited to just 300 pieces, the Amazonia is mounted on a double-layer carbon nylon / FKM rubber strap in a color matching the green of the dial. It’s an ideal choice for a 300m waterproof watch ready for any adventure.

Housed in the same 44mm multi-part stainless steel case as the Glacier, the Amazonia uses a deep black PVD coating that gives the case a stealthy appearance, perfect for exploring the unknown. No matter how deep you venture into the jungle, tracking your home is made easy with GMT functionality and world times clearly marked on the bezel.

ZTAGE has opted for a sandwich dial on its GMT watches, with the deep green of the bottom layer bursting against the matte black of the dial. Even at night, the Amazonia remains very readable thanks to the hands and indexes heavily coated with Swiss Super-LumiNova. The Amazonia is powered by the Caliber 1100 (modified Soprod) automatic movement which beats at 28.8 km / h and has a 42-hour power reserve. Like all ZTAGE watches, the Amazonia is regulated with an accuracy of +/- 6 seconds / day and fully tested at the brand’s headquarters for 240 hours.

Traveling 10,000 km east across the Atlantic, we leave the lush and noisy understory of the Amazon Basin, now traveling to the scorching plains of the African savannah to find the latest version of ZTAGE in the collection, the Off Ground GMT – Savanna. Home to some of the most iconic species on the planet, the African savannah is a land of change and transformation. Each year, millions of animals – from elephants to wildebeest – undertake one of the world’s longest and most arduous migrations, stalking the seasonal rains that turn a parched landscape into an oasis.

ZTAGE was inspired by this incredible landscape and these breathtaking biological phenomena in its creation of the GMT – Savanna. Unlike the deep greens of GMT – Amazonia, this version of the Off Ground GMT uses a beige colourway that evokes the endless plains of African grasslands. With a color-matched integrated bracelet featuring a personalized clasp, the GMT – Savanna is perfect for tracking zebras and giraffes on the African plains.

The three models of the ZTAGE x WWF collection are available for pre-order from January 15 to 22, 2022. The Hybrid Original – Full Calendar Glacier is limited to 200 pieces and available for 3.800 CHF, while the Off Ground GMT – Amazonia and Savanna are limited to 300 coins each and available for CHF 1,980. A portion of the proceeds from each sale will be donated to WWF-Hong Kong to support conservation efforts in these endangered ecosystems.
